14 Good Reasons NOT to buy this Trail Blazer TBL-24BR 2-inch ratchet lopper
By George's View
I read the three reviews that were displayed here on this bypass lopper as well as the reviews of Trail Blazer's similar product, the anvil lopper, and nearly all were favorable. Before I put these loppers to use, I was impressed by the operation and appearance. They had heavy duty looking telescoping handles that adjusted easily, etc. But soon after using them, I began to notice problems. I really wanted to believe they were great, so I remained positive. I spent many years working as an electrician and have used ratcheting cable cutters of similar size as well as ratcheting hand-held cable cutters and ratcheting PVC pipe cutters - all of which were FAR superior to these loppers, both in design and quality - but I was still looking for the good qualities of these loppers.I started testing the loppers on 1" or smaller live branches on the four trees I wanted to trim: 2 softer ones - a Texas Privet and an Asian Pear tree - and two harder trees - an apple tree and a fir tree. When the ratchet on the loppers worked as it should, cutting even the harder woods was pretty easy, but I found that I often had to manually move the ratcheting mechanism to the proper slot because it wasn't auto-adjusting, as it should - sort of like a multi-speed bicycle that's not shifting properly. And, it frequently got to a point of free wheeling - not engaging. It also frequently did not give clean cuts- it wouldn't finish cutting completely through, causing the bark to rip or stay attached to the lopper until I cut it free. The last problem was the most telling - one of the handles actually bent cutting a live 1.5" branch on the fir tree, as I watched the handle in disbelief. I'm guessing that the original design specifications called for a high strength aluminum alloy, but the Taiwanese manufacturer must have substituted a much lower strength alloy. I've put as much force or more on my much smaller Corona bypass loppers many times and never come close to bending them - but they have steel handles. These loppers also really mash the backside of the branch where it it's held because that part of the lopper is just too thin, allowing the force to be concentrated in a very small area. The 4 Main Reasons not to buy:1. Ratcheting mechanism is an inferior design and frequently disengages and free wheels or goes into the wrong "gear."2. Often the loppers do not completely finish cutting all the way through, causing the bark on the backside to tear.3. They severely mash the bark on the backside of the cut because the piece that holds the branch is just too thin for 2" capacity cutters, which exert tremendous force in cutting such large branches.4. The handle alloy is WAY too soft and actually bent cutting a 1.5" branch with the telescoping handles less than half-way extended - overall length of the loppers was 32" at that point - a pretty average length for 2" capacity loppers without adjustable handles. Imagine how far the handle would have bent if I'd had them fully extended.I thought these were made in Canada, which caused me to hope they would be well made, but the label on them says made in Taiwan and partially assembled in Canada. Taiwan has a long history of making cheap low quality tools that bend and break (and of course they make some high quality products as well), but these loppers fall into the cheap, junky tools category. The loppers that are more professional quality are pretty pricey like the ratcheting Florian Maxi Lopper (RL201) with 2" capacity for around $179 Maxi Lopper , the Felco 22 (32" with 2" capacity, non-ratcheting) for around $150 Felco Lopper, and the Bahco 32" Landscape Loppers P19-80 (non-ratcheting) with 2" capacity for $109 on Amazon Bahco 32-Inch Landscape Loppers P19-80 - but all three are also long lasting from what reviewers say.

4Product is excellent
By M. DeStefano
The product was everything I expected. The shipping cost were a little high and I did not appreciate the fact that you had to sign for the delivery. Other than that the product was exactly what I wanted and it was a quality item.

4Almost great
By Shawn
The reach is great, the ratcheting mechanism is very good, but the handles are pretty flimsy when fully extended. With stronger handles these loppers would be perfect.

I have tried to find Trail Blazer for a warranty issue. I can't even find their phone #. The gears slip, poor quality.
