Weak spring.
By R. Casanego
I was a parks maint. worker for 10 years. This pole pruner has a weak spring on the pruning blade. This can cause the blade to slowly retract sometimes. This can be a real hassle when the blade is 16 feet in the air. This pruner is double telescoping The bottom section is fiberglass. The top 2 sections are aluminum. This pruner flexes quite a bit when fully extended. The saw blade cuts well. It,s a good idea to remove the saw blade when not in use. Also the top section should be retracted when using the saw blade because the top section flexes too much. The foam rubber around the fiberglass section tears easily. I put a steel tube over one end of the spring to increase the tension. The sections do not slip when the plastic locking rings are hand tight but the upper ring sometimes must be loosened with large chanellock pliers. you will need the pliers to pull the cord out of the adjustable hand grip. Fiskars powergear loppers are exellent, this pruner needs inprovement. I would rate this pruner 2.5 stars. If Fiskars installed a stronger spring and reduced the top section flex I would rate this pruner 5 stars.

Mediocre
By Amazon shopper
I would echo R Casengo's review, it is spot on. On my first use with the pole extended to maximum length, the flexing that was present while pulling the rope to activate the cutter on a relatively small branch was a bit ridiculous. I tried it on a very large branch and the whole thing acted more like a fishing rod than a tool, fighting me to make the cut. The bottom line is the tool can cut twigs while fully extended but rapidly loses effectiveness as the branch size increases. As the pole is retracted it starts to become more useful at lengths below 12 feet or so.It's not a bad pole. I also have the Fiskars 12 foot pruning stick and that pole is solid when fully extended. This 16 foot pole's mechanism has the advantage of hooking a branch into the jaws, whereas the pruning stick requires you to push the jaws up against the branch ... though I find at maximum extension it is difficult to maneuver the pole to hook the branch and then make the cut vs push the jaws and quickly get the cut underway. When you have your neck bent out of shape trying to move the pole into position, the quicker you get to cutting the better.I would recommend this pole to a friend, but I think I would give a higher recommendation to the pruning stick version though it seems to only be available up to 12 feet.

Well made bit of kit...

I've only used one other pole trimmer before so I am not privy to how they ALL work, but I have to say this one is VERY good. If it had a bit less flex when fully extended, I'd have given it 5 stars. Otherwise, buy with confidence that you're getting a good tool. I used it last night to cut down probably 20 branches on my and my neighbors soft maple trees. The saw is sharp and cuts quickly. It's hard to get a lot of leverage when fully extended, but that's par for the course when the saw is 16 feet away from you and on the end of a poll that retracts into itself. The pruner/shear works VERY well and is setup to give you a lot of cutting power with very little pull of the rope. Weak spring? I didn't have that issue at all... Would I buy this tool if this was the tool I used EVERYDAY? Probably not. I'm sure there are better (more expensive) units out there for those that use them on the job. For the person using it at home. IT'S PERFECT!!!Overall... A good buying experience.
