Used by Professional Lawn Care Companies and Nurseries. Wonderful for serious gardeners who want to check the pH level in their garden. This soil pH meter is simple and easy to use. Test your soil with accuracy and ease to determine if you need to adjust soil acidity. The pH scale ranging from 0 to 14 is used to indicate acidity and alkalinity. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, values below 7.0 are acid, and those above are alkaline. The lower the pH the more acid is the soil. The higher the pH, the more alkaline. The pH values of some common items are: pure water, 7.0: lemon juice, 2.2 to 2.4; orange juice, 3.4 to 4.0; fresh milk, 6.3 to 6.6; mild soap solution, 8.5 to 10.0; most Ontario soils, 4.5 to 8.0. Soil pH is important chiefly because of the many effects it has on biological and chemical activity of the soil, which effects the metabolism of your plants. I needed a quick way to evaluate the pH in my garden beds, especially those that prefer an acid pH like blueberries, azaleas and rhodos. This little tool does the trick for me without having to send off a sample to a lab and wait several weeks for an answer. I knew my blueberries were chlorotic and that the pH should be in the 4.5 to 5.5 range, but I was unsure just how far off my soil was. So I ordered this meter, dug a hole 5" deep by 4" wide, filled it with water and after it drained I tested it using this meter. The pH was 6.2 - there was my answer - in 15 minutes total (including digging the hole and waiting for the water to drain through) instead of 2 weeks. This thing is great. No batteries, no waiting and it can be used over and over again on my 2 acres. If you are a garden junkie, this thing is indispensable. It pays for itself in 2 to 5 uses, and will last for years. Note to future users: if you do your research on pH testing you'll find that you need to test the soil at the fibrous root level. That means 5 to 8" below the soil. If you dig at least a 5" hole (after pushing any mulch aside) and insert the meter about 2" you're in the zone.

I have a small farm (5 acres) with several gardens and a lot of grass. With basic soil tests for PH running about $10 each from the agricultural extension office, this solid little meter nearly paid for itself in the first 30 minutes out of the box!Just read the instructions, follow the instructions, and each PH reading takes about 3 minutes. Since I had recently had some soil sammples done, I was able to pretty much verify that the gage was "spot-on" by sampling some known areas.It also comes with a handy reference for PH levels for just about everything you can grow, what a super and well-made product!

After trying with spotty success to grow a variety of shrubs, flowers, and trees in our southwestern US suburban half-acre lot, I turned to the possibility that our soil -- it is mostly clay former Rio Grande river bed -- was out of the PH range many plants wanted to see. Several years of applying iron sulfate helped a lot, but how much was enough, and how much was too much? I saw and bought this PH meter. Indeed, the PH varies widely from place to place in our yard. This meter does a great job of indicating how much PH change we need -- and where we need it. We have healthier, greener plants with no excess expenditure on iron sulphate (Ironite) which is not inexpensive. The meter is a great tool!
